This prayer, called 'Aarti', for the sacred river Ganges has been performed every day for over 2,000 years and each time it is performed, it is logged in the official records of the town. This particular night was especially auspicious as it was New Year's eve, so there were thousands of on-lookers at the ceremony. Thousand of tea lights are lit every night and sent floating in the Ganges and at dawn many of them are still lit.
